November Events Calendar
October 31, 2008. Mr. Freij's and Ms. Ray's Journalism Classes launched their Blog. Heartfelt and direct from the Bronx.
May 5, 2008. Visual Studies teacher Don Cerrone is one of 11 winners of the 2008 Cable's Leaders in Education Award for the documentary film, "Recapturing Glory" made by Mr. Cerrone and his students. Mr. Cerrone was the only teacher from the state of NY selected for this prestigious award.

April 18, 2008. The latest online issue of our new school newspaper thanks to Ms. Manning, Ms. Ray, Ashlyn Soto, Indigo Solomon, Tyrell Sykes, Ayisha King, and Ryan Clark.

Winter 2007. Recapturing Glory is nominated for a Beacon Award coveted as cable television’s highest award for communications and public affairs excellence. Recapturing Glory was made possible through the support of Cablevision's Power to Learn, the Independent Film Channel, and Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion, Jr.
November 13, 2007. The Apple Store in Soho hosted Jonathan Levin School Night. Multimedia work was digitally presented at computer stations on the first floor. Students spoke about their work to interested store patrons, parents, teachers and each other.

The International Center for Photography, both a museum and one of the largest schools of photography in the world, gave an award to senior Quintasia Stratton.
September 2007. Our weather station is installed and transmitting from high atop the roof of the Taft Educational Campus. The live courtyard weather webcam updates every 30 seconds.
Our school becomes a ground floor member of Rethos.org, "a social networking website and media portal. Rethos.org's members believe that as consumers and global citizens, we have tremendous power to effect change."
August 13-18, 2007. Several of our students' films are showcased at The Bronx N-Spired Film Festival. The objective of the festival is "to bring visual awareness and introduce alternative conflict resolutions for issues embedded within underserved communities." At the Bronx Center in the new library on East Kingsbridge, four JLHS student films were featured: High School Drop Out (Maxxi Prather), Hard Times (Deysha Parades), Violence (Dirk Farquharson), and The 'N' Word (Rugie Kerekou and Bridget Sarpon). News 12 The Bronx came out to cover the event and interviewed Rugie Kerekou and Bridget Sarpon about their work. Deysha, Rugie and Bridget fielded audience questions with intelligence and tact. We are very proud of them and how they represented JLHS at this event.
The 'N' Word will be shown again at 8 pm on Saturday, August 18th on a big outdoor screen at Parkchester Green on the field behind 1594 Metropolitan Ave. Saturday is the last day of the festival.

New York Youth Media Arts Show, March 15, 2007
Kristy Garcia, Nailpolish Myra Guerrero,Stealing Isn't Cool Jeffery Tackie & Randal, Violence Maxxi Prather, High School Drop Out January 2007. ArtsConnection recognized several NYC public school students for their artistic achievement in the performing, media and visual arts through their "Tales of the City" exhibition. Rose Angel Rivera and Michael Silvestre were the only 10th grade students to have their photography chosen. Quintasia Stratton (11th grade) was also honored. Each student was awarded a scholarship for a pre-college class at Parsons School of Design. Their photography will be featured in corporate offices throughout the city.
December 21, 2006. Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion, Jr. visited our school to announce the availability of free Triple Play for Education technology to all schools in the Bronx. Internet, video and voice for learning purposes to schools will be provided throughout the NY Metro area. Mr. Cerrone and Ms. Johannes' broadcast journalism class presented plans for a documentary filmmaking project, Recapturing Glory, that will be supported through curriculum and resources by Cablevision's Power to Learn and the Independent Film Channel.

December 14, 2006. Earvin "Magic" Johnson spoke to all the students in the Taft educational complex about the impact of HIV/AIDS on African Americans and the measures individuals can take to fight the epidemic.
  Mr. Johnson shared his personal story of living with HIV and how knowing your HIV status can save lives, starting with your own. A physician from Abbott Laboratories also provided perspective on available community resources. JLHS students interviewed Magic in our school's new television studio. Pictured with Magic are Jessica Rondon and Loretta Odro.
November 2006. A state-of-the-art digitial recording studio has been set up by our Visual Studies & English Teacher Ron Link. Students can now compose and record original soundtracks for the many digital video projects created in our school. Additionally, students who meet minimum attendance and academic requirements can utilize the studio for their own original musical work.

April 25, 2006. Several of our students were honored as participants and winners in Learning Leaders and HITN-TV's 2006 Public Service Announcement Competition Awards Ceremony and Reception held at Hunter College in Manhattan. Christine Ho of Learning Leaders and Pedro Pedraza, Director of the Center for Puerto Rican Studies announced the winners who were given awards in recognition of their work by John Corwin, Learning Leaders' CEO.

March 27, 2006- Congratulations to Senior Sandra Appiah and her teachers. She is the recipient of a New York Times Scholarship. Sandra was one of 20 students selected from over 1,400 applicants.
